SIAN EVANS IS A-SUN FRESHMAN OF YEAR, NAMED TO FIRST TEAM

Last year's Kent women's county champion
Sian Evans, pictured, from Gillingham, coming up to the end of her first college year (2010-2011) as a student at East Tennessee State University, has had her very good performances on the US women's college golf circuit recognised officially in the annual list of Atlantic Sun Women's Golf Conference honours.
The Press Release read:
The final All-Atlantic First-Team spot went to ETSU freshman Sian Evans. In addition to the First-Team honour, she became the second Buccaneer named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year - joining Laura Jansone in 2007. Sian became the fourth freshman to also make the First Team in the last three years (Buelow and Premchuen in 2010, Stetson’s Lauren Cate in 2009).
Evans headed up the All-Freshmen Team where she, Kennesaw State’s Hayley Clinning, Stetson’s Mallory Viera and Mercer’s Mary Alice Murphy all made the team unanimously. Campbell’s Kaylin Yost rounded the team.
The Atlantic Sun Conference is an 11-member league: Belmont University, Campbell University, East Tennessee State University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Jacksonville University, Kennesaw State University, Lipscomb University, Mercer University, University of North Florida, University of South Carolina Upstate and Stetson University.

CHARLEY HULL WINS WELSH STROKE PLAY BY A SHOT

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Colin@scottishgolfview.com
Woburn's rising star Charley Hull looked like running away with the Welsh women's open amateur stroke-play title when she established a commanding lead after two rounds at Tenby Golf Club.
In the end, the 15-year-old, pictured right at Royal Troon last weekend, who was a bit hit on the Orange Blossom Tour in Florida at the start of the year, sagged to closing round of 79 after earlier efforts of 74 and 72 had put some distance between her and the rest of the field.
She needed all her big advantage to win by a single shot from former Welsh girls champion Lucy Gould (Bargoed) with three more Welsh players, Amy Boulden (Maesdu), Chloe Williams (Wrexham) and Becky Harries (Haverfordwest) filling the next three places.
Hull had scores of 74, 72 and 79 for a total of nine-over-par 216 but it has to be remembered that the Tenby links' women's course has an SSS of 76 and the CSS this weekend was 77-76-78.
Gould, a former US college circuit player as a student at East Tennessee State University, shot 77, 74 and 75 for 226.
Top Scot was teenager Hannah McCook who made the long trek to South Wales from Nethy Bridge near Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands. Hannah scored 81, 76 and 77 for 234 and shared 12th place with Curtis Cup player and former English champion Hannah Barwood (Knowle) (79-77-76).
Rachael Watton (Mortonhall) finished tied 15th on 236 (80-80-76) with Jane Turner (Craigielaw) and Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) sharing 21st place on 240. Jane scored 78, 81 and 81, Alyson 81, 78 and 81.
Gabrielle Macdonald (Craigielaw) started with a nightmare 90 but settled to score 77 and 84 for 251 and a share of 35th place.
Stirling student Rebecca Wilson (Grange) shot 82, 86 and 85 for 253.
Scottish champion Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) withdrew before the start of the tournament.

DONNA POCOCK WINS LAST THREE HOLES FOR SHIRE TITLE

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Murcar Links women's club champion Donna Pocock staged a grandstand finish over her home course to beat Laura Murray (Alford), the No 1 seed, a Scotland cap and last year's St Rule Trophy winner, by one hole in the Aberdeenshire women's county championship Centenary Final.
Donna, playing in the final for the third time in the past four years - she was also county champion in 2008, was two up after eight holes but Laura won the ninth, 10th, 12th and 14th to be two up … and she still led by two with three to play.
Pocock, pictured on right by Karen Stalker, then won the 16th, 17th and 18th for a smash-and-grab victory to repeat her 2008 success.
Murray, who lost to Michele Thomson in her only other appearance in the final, in 2007, took three to get down from just off the green at the short 16th, drove wide right at the 17th,  too close to one of the few trees on the course and took three to get on the green at this par-4 hole.
Then, with both players home in two at the last par-4 hole, Pocock 12ft away and Murray about nine feet, Donna, able to use her local knowledge, wasted no time at all in sinking her birdie putt across the slope while Laura could not follow her in.
Pocock was round in an approximate 77 to Murray's 78, allowing for conceded putts.
"I drove well and I putted well to beat Sara Mathieson in the morning semi-final and then Laura in the final," said Donna. "I don't think I missed a fairway in the final and that makes a difference."
The inaugural county handicap championship was won by the county captain's daughter Lauren Whyte (Hazlehead), who was 21 years old last Thursday. Conceding a stroke, the nine-handicapper came back from three down after six holes to lead by three holes after 14, going on to win by 3 and 2 against another birthday girl, Lynne Tough (Newmachar) who was 42 today.
The handicappers' event was introduced at the instigation of past county captain Fiona Hay who has donated the salver for annual competition. It is hoped that there will be a significant rise in the number of entries next year by higher handicap players, now that they see there is a place for them in the championship.
Next year's county championship will be played over Royal Aberdeen's Balgownie links.
TODAY'S RESULTS
SEMI-FINALS
Laura Murray (Alford) bt Claire Prouse (Hazlehead) 6 and 4.
Donna Pocock (Murcar Links) bt Sara Mathieson (Murcar Links) 3 and 1.
FINAL
Pocock bt L Murray 1 hole.

HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIP
Final
Lauren Whyte (Hazlehead) (9) bt Lynne Tough (Newmachar) (10) 3 and 1
The number of trees on Murcar Links can be counted on the fingers of one hand - but Laura Murray found one at the 17th in the final off her drive and she could only play a restricted swing for her second shot which came up short of the green - and contributed to her loss of the hole, which allowed Donna Pocock to square the final.

Donna Pocock in action at the 17th as she comes from two down with three to play to win the title

In the morning semi-finals, Marshall had a resounding 7 and 6 win over former international Claire Hargan (Strathmore), six times past county champion.
