Yani Tseng, the new Ricoh Women’s British Open champion

FROM THE LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR WEBSITE
Taiwan’s Yani Tseng recorded a wire-to-wire victory at the Ricoh Women’s British Open, becoming the youngest player in history to have won three Major championships at the age of 21.
The bubbly Tseng won her second Major of the year and her third in total on a sunny afternoon at Royal Birkdale in Southport.
She fired a final round of 73 for an 11-under-par total of 277 and finished one shot ahead of Australian Katherine Hull.
Tseng fought off a spirited challenge from Hull. After three holes, her four stroke lead was trimmed to one, but she responded instantly with a birdie at the fourth as Hull took a bogey on the same hole.
Tseng regained her four stroke lead with a birdie at the par-five sixth and there was no change in the score line as both players made the turn in level par 35. However, after Tseng bogeyed the 10th, Hull had the title back in her sights and she birdied the 11th and 13th holes to get within one again.
Coming down the stretch, neither player was able to beat par, but Tseng breathed a sigh of relief as Hull missed a chance to tie from 20 feet at the 17th.
The par-five 18th hole still held its dramas. Tseng’s drive found a fairway bunker and she was forced to play her second shot out to the fairway, before hitting her third shot from 144 yards to the back of the green.
Hull hit her second shot long and chipped to 15 feet but her birdie putt slipped past the left edge of the hole. Tseng was then able to roll her second putt into the heart of the hole for a par to take the first prize of £261,493.
It meant that she could fill another space in the roomy trophy cabinet she inherited from Annika Sorenstam when she bought the former world No.1’s home in Lake Nona, Florida. It was Tseng’s fifth victory as a professional and her fourth on the LPGA Tour.
Sorenstam, who is Tseng’s idol, had sent a text message the night before the final round, and Tseng had written her words in her yardage book.
“Yesterday she left me a message and she said I'm very happy to see you on top; that's where you belong. I was very happy to get her message. And she said, just trust your ability and you will be fine,” she said.
It was the first time that Tseng had won a tournament after leading going into the final round, four times having thrown a lead away and she considered it her best victory.
“I think it's the toughest win I feel. I always come from behind; I was never leading and won the tournament, I was always leading and lost. So today was really good. It meant a lot to me that I know I can do it when I really need to do it to win a tournament. I was nervous and tired,” she said.
“I was tired today because of all the pressure, all the tension. I was just really trying to focus because Katherine was really pushing me, and then I was just trying to stay relaxed, everything. It was a really tough day for me having a four shot lead going into Sunday.”
Queenslander Hull, 28, settled for a round of 70 and recorded her best finish in 23 appearances at Major championships.
Three shots back at seven under par, South Korean Na Yeon Choi, known as ‘NYC’, tied for third place with compatriot In Kyung Kim, the 2009 Omega
Dubai Ladies Masters champion. Fellow Korean Amy Yang tied for fifth at six under par with Hee-Kyung Seo and Cristie Kerr of the United States.
Maria Hernandez of Spain and Norwegian Suzann Pettersen were the leading European players in a share of 14th place on one-under-par, while regular Ladies European Tour competitors Lee-Anne Pace and Becky Brewerton tied for 21st place.
Caroline Hedwall of Sweden, 21, took the Smyth Salver as the leading amateur in equal 27th and is one to watch, following in the footsteps of former recipients such as Anna Nordqvist.

PAMELA PRETSWELL PIPPED FOR AUSTRIAN TITLE

Curtis Cup Scot Pamela Pretswell was pipped on the post for victory in the Austrian women's amateur golf championship at Murhof Golf Club today.
The Glasgow University student and Bothwell Castle GC member, who won the Swiss women's open amateur title a couple of years ago, looked on course for another victory on the continent when she opened the 72-hole tournament with a nine-birdie round of six-under-par 66.
She was still leading the international field by one shot going into the final round but was caught over the last two holes by Klara Spilkova (Czech Republic) who birdied six of the last 11 holes for a 66 and a 10-under-par total of 278.
Pretswell, in her final round, bogeyed the eighth, birdied the 10th and 12th ... but had to settle for pars at the last six holes. She finished with a 71 for nine-under 279.
Leading final totals:
278 Klara Spilkova (Czech Rep) 71 70 71 66.
279 Pamela Pretswell (Sco) 66 72 70 71.
280 Sarah Schober (Aut) 71 71 68 70.
282 Tereza Vavruskova (Czech Rep) 73 69 67 73.

Pamela Pretswell E-mails the news to Kirkwoodgolf.co.uk

This week I have been playing in the Austrian Ladies International Championship at Murhof Golf Club [www.murhof.at], the venue for next year's European Ladies Team Championship.
I took the opportunity to play in this European Ladies ranking event by flying directly from the International European Ladies' Amateur Championship at Golf and Spa Resort Kunetickà Hora in the Czech Republic, where I finished in sixth place with a 72 hole score of three under par.
I am really grateful for the support provided by the Scottish Ladies Golf Association and our sponsors Aberdeen Asset Management which allowed me to play in these events.
I finished runner-up in this 72 hole championship with a final total of 9 under par. I scored a 6 under 66 in the first round, including nine birdies, to lead the championship and followed that up with a par 72 and a 2 under 70 on Saturday to lead by one shot at eight under going into the final 18 holes today.
I shot a one-under-par round of 71 today, including two birdies, for a nine-under-par total of 279. Unfortunately, this was one shot more than winner Klara Spilkova (Czech Republic) who started in fourth place today and played in the group in front of me. Klara shot a six under 66 with six birdies over the final 13 holes, including birdies at 17 and 18 to finish one ahead of me on 278.
Although it was disappointing to be pipped at the post after leading throughout the championship, I have been delighted with the way that I have been playing during the last few weeks. I am starting to benefit from playing more regularly now that I have a summer break from my studies at Glasgow University and really pleased to score 12 under in my last 8 rounds.
Looking forward to the rest of my season and to playing the Murhof course again with the Scottish Ladies team at the European Team Championship next year - and perhaps doing even better than the fantastic bronze medal that we won at La Manga, Spain in July.

Taiwan player leads by four in Women's British Open

FROM THE AOL GOLF NEWS SERVICE
Yani Tseng of Taiwan retained her four-shot lead going into the final round of the Ricoh Women's British Open after she eagled the last hole for a third-straight four-under-par 68.
Tseng parred the first 12 holes to maintain her overnight position at eight under before birdies at the 13th and 15th further strengthened her hold on the event, and she finished with a flourish as her three at the 432-yard closer took her clear of the field.
Australia's Katherine Hull surged into second place after finishing a hitherto unspectacular round with five successive birdies for a 66, six under par on the day and eight under overall.
But even that round was bettered by Morgan Pressel, who bounced back from starting her round with back-to-back bogeys to record eight birdies and an eagle three at the 17th for a 65, rocketing her up the leaderboard to a share of 10th place on three under.
South Korea's In Kyung Kim is third overall at six under, two shots behind Hull and one ahead of Brittany Lincicome, after four birdies and a closing eagle in a 68.
A group of five players - Kim's compatriot Seo Hee-kyung, Japan's Momoko Ueda, Americans Christina Kim and Cristie Kerr and Suzann Petterson of Norway- follow on four under, with Pressel alongside Na Yeon Choi at three under.
Karine Icher of France and Spain's Maria Hernandez provide an overdue European presence at level par, with Wales' Becky Brewerton the leading British player a further shot back alongside another Spaniard in Azahara Munoz Guijarro and France's Anne-Lise Caudal.
Brewerton provided the highlight of the day, though, with a hole-in-one at the par-three 12th.
