Yorkshire'S one-point lead in North County Match Week

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Yorkshire take a one-point lead into tomorrow’s final day of North region County Match Week at Carlisle Golf Club.
The winner of the week will join five other teams at the national finals of the English Counties’ Championship at Kedleston Park, Derbyshire. The competition series is supported by Virgin Atlantic.
Yorkshire, who last won the national title in 2008, are hot favourites to go forward to this year’s County Finals. However, they can be caught by their final day opponents, Cheshire. And, mathematically speaking, defending champions Lancashire could pull off an overall win if the other results go their way.
In today’s matches Yorkshire beat Durham 5½-3½ and have four points from four matches. Lancashire beat Cumbria 8½-½ and have three points. Cheshire beat Northumberland 8-1 and also have three points.
This is the last of six County Match Weeks. Five have already been completed and the winners are: Dorset (South West region), Sussex (South), Lincolnshire (Midlands North), Northamptonshire (Midlands South) and Hertfordshire (East).

Tara Watters is top seed in English mid-amateur championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Middlesex golfer Tara Watters leads the qualifiers for the matchplay stages of the English women’s open mid-amateur championship at Bristol and Clifton Golf Club.
Tara, from Muswell Hill, enjoys the big stage. In May she was runner-up, for the second time, in the English amateur championship.
“I do like big championships, I like the challenge,” she said after returning a three-over par total for the 36-hole qualifying. “I always seem to come second so it’s great to be first for a change. But there’s nowhere safe in the matchplay draw! There will be lots of good girls lower down who just had a bad day.”
Tara qualified one shot ahead of her playing partner, the England international Charlotte Ellis (pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency) of Gloucestershire.
“Playing with Charlotte was really good , there was nothing much between us and it was almost like match-play. It certainly kept the momentum going,” said Tara.
Her game plan was to keep the ball straight and it worked. “As long as you keep it out of the bunkers and keep straight you’re fine. I made a mess of one of the easiest par fives but, apart from that, I was steady and played consistently.”
Defending champion Katie Mundy reached the knock-out stages with a pair of 79s and the host club’s Sian James also made it through, despite a disappointing 84 in the first round. She came back with a fighting 76 which included an eagle and a birdie and qualified in 22nd place.
Tara’s afternoon 73 equalled the low round of the day. Lincolnshire’s Jess Schiele set the standard in her morning round and it was also matched by Charlotte Ellis in the afternoon. Another Lincolnshire player, Jess Wilcox, had a second round 74.
The tournament is contested by players aged 18 and over and the top 32 competitors qualified for the knock-out stages

LADIES EUROPEAN TOUR REPORT, SCORES

Reid and Wikstrom take route

66 on Day 1 in Tenerife
NEWS RELEASE
England’s Melissa Reid, pictured left, and Finland’s Ursula Wikstrom posted a pair of six under par 66s in fine but windy conditions to share the first round lead at the Tenerife Ladies Open today.
Reid, playing at Buenavista Golf for the first time and without a practice round, carded six birdies, two bogeys and an eagle at the par-five 18th hole.
The 22-year-old Turkish Airlines Ladies Open champion was then joined by Wikstrom, who teed off ten minutes later and made eight birdies, along with a double bogey at the par-four 11th.
Reid had four birdies and one bogey on her front nine but missed four birdie putts from less than five feet.
Three under at the turn, she made a crucial 15-foot bogey putt at the 11th which was the catalyst for a back nine of three under. She birdied the short 12th and the 16th, before striking a seven-iron to within 30 feet of the hole at the par-five 18th.
On her 11th-hole bogey, Reid said: “I hit a really good drive there, just completely came out of it; a bad second shot and then I had a bad chip and then another bad chip. A double bogey is a bit of a killer really you’ve got to make two birdies to get it back whereas a bogey you can get over the next hole. It definitely kept the momentum going.
“An eagle to finish was nice. I felt like I left a couple out there. It’s only the first day but you certainly play your way into the tournament and want to shoot as low as you can. Hopefully I’ll keep it going.”
“There are a big five weeks coming up after this so I’ve been doing a bit of preparation for that and it’s quite good that it’s windy, like Birkdale,” she said. “You’ve got to hit some low shots, especially with wedges and short irons so it’s all good practice for Birkdale.”
While she has secured her place at the Major championship, Wikstrom was the top ranked player on the LET’s Henderson Money List not to qualify.
This week, she has another chance to secure her place at the Ricoh Women’s British Open, as the top three finishers at the Tenerife Ladies Open not already exempt who have entered will receive a place.

Sheena McElroy is new Irish seniors championship

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION
Sheena McElroy (Grange) was crowned Irish Seniors Champion after a crushing defeat by 7 and 6 of debutante Niamh Giblin (Dun Laoghaire) at Tullamore Golf Club today.
McElroy got off to a flying start with a birdie at the first and stood three up through four holes as Giblin struggled to repeat the form that saw her record impressive victories in previous rounds. The turning point transpired at the long seventh where McElroy found water on her approach. Giblin, who looked like reducing the deficit, cleared the green with her approach only to finish out of bounds and the gap widened to five holes.
McElroy went on to increase the gap to six holes with a solid par on the short ninth and when Giblin failed to make inroads on the deficit, McElroy comfortably ended the affair on the 12th green.
Earlier in the day, McElroy (Grange) holed from ten feet for birdie on the ninth to turn three up on her way to victory over a luckless Marilyn Henderson (Castlerock) in the second semi-final. Giblin had earlier put an end to Valerie Hassett's (Ennis) excellent run this week hitting almost every fairway on the outward nine and holing out solidly on the greens to close out her match on 14.
McElroy will now lead the Irish Seniors Team at the European Senior Team Championships in Berlin in August having captured her second Irish Seniors Close title in three years.
Today's results:
SEMI-FINALS
Niamh Giblin (Dun Laoghaire) bt Valerie Hassett (Ennis) 5 and 4.
Sheena McElroy (Grange) bt Marilyn Henderson (Castlerock) 4 and 3.
FINAL
McElroy bt Giblin  7 and 6.

Laura chalks up a score of Duff House Royal titles

FROM THE PRESS AND JOURNAL
By DAVE EDWARDS
Duff House Royal women's captain Laura McLardy has won the Banff club's women's championship for the 20th time. The 33-year-old, who lives and works in Aberdeen as a chartered tax adviser, first lifted the title at the age of 13 and, with one exception, she has retained the silverware every other year.
She said: "I didn't win the club championship in 1992. Jacqui Duncan, or Fraser as she was at the time, won that year but I have lifted the trophy every other year since I first won it as a junior playing the women's championship in1990.
"There are a few other players in the region who have achieved similar feats, such as Meg Sievewright at Keith, Rose Andereson at Huntly, Linda Smith at Buckpool and Turriff's Pat Shepherd, who is in the Guinness Book of Records for winning 30 club championships on the trot.
"I would like to win a few more. I am playing off a hanidcap of four and my game is coming back after I started the season slowly."
McLardy won this year's championship by seven shots from Louise Anderson. She said: "I represented Northern Counties for seven years and when I moved to Aberdeen in 2000, I started playing for the Aberdeenshire women's team., although I did not play this year.
"Duff House Royal has recovered well after the flooding. I have the honour of being women's captain in our centenary year and that is very special."
