Laura Jones became Conference champion
-
for the second consecutive year

FROM THE OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY WEBSITE
Oklahoma City University captured the team title for the seventh consecutive year, while OCU’s Laura Jones (pictured right) from England became individual champion for the second year in a row in the Sooner Athletic Conference women’s golf championships at River Oaks Golf Club, Edmond in the state of Oklahoma this week.
The second-ranked and five-time defending NAIA champion Stars edged 12th-ranked Southern Nazarene by two strokes. Jones, a member of Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, nudged by teammate Paige Martin in the individual race by three shots.
OCU assured itself of a berth in the NAIA Championships on May 25-28 at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City, S.D., by becoming conference champ. Ninth-ranked and third-place Lubbock Christian (Texas) and No. 16 and fourth-place Wayland Baptist (Texas) will hope to get one of the 6-8 at-large spots along with Southern Nazarene into the 24-team, 129-individual national field.
The Stars recorded a 320-305–625 to rally from a six-stroke deficit after the first 18 holes. Southern Nazarene shot 314-313–627, and Lubbock Christian ended with a 315-321–636. Wayland Baptist had a 332-333–665.
“Wow,” said OCU coach M.J. Desbiens, who garnered SAC coach of the year honors. “I’m really excited about the upperclassmen. They really did their job well today. It was a disappointing day yesterday, but a great day today knowing that I can count on all eight of my team members. We had a great team meeting that focused on adversity. Everyone responded well from that. I’m equally proud of Laura and Paige for their round today. They were very clutch.”
Jones, a junior from Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England, fired a 77-70–147 for her fourth US college win. Jones birdied the first, eighth, 16th and 18th holes.
“It’s a nice feeling,” Jones said. “I was quietly confident entering the tournament. I’ve worked hard with our strength coach Jack Pugh these past couple of weeks and worked on my fitness. I hadn’t felt good physically. I’ve practiced hard on my game and my mental game. I hadn’t been positive. It feels good heading into nationals with a win.”
She finished with bogeys on the 13th and 14th holes, using 3 putts on each hole.
“If I hadn’t have done that, I would have had a perfect round, and I was aiming for a perfect round,” Jones said. “But I stayed positive and went on.”
Desbiens said, “I can’t say enough about what Laura has done in the past three weeks. She is definitely playing up to her potential. She is on her way to perform really well at nationals.”
Martin sank four birdies Tuesday, scoring a 32 on the front nine on the way to an 80-70–150.
Andrea Rojas led Southern Nazarene with a 77-74–151, while Charlotte Guilleux carded 82-71–153 for Wayland Baptist. Sinae Montoya of Lubbock Christian shot 75-79–154 to be the final top-five finisher and grab all-SAC acclaim.
The temperature reached 68 degrees on the par-71, 5,998-yard course. Winds were out of the northwest up to 13 mph. Skies were clear, making for a warmer day than Monday.
“There was a lot more pressure today,” Desbiens said. “The pin placements were very good. The golf course did a good job setting up for a championship event. They were set up fairly. The good players made their marks. I think the conditions were easier today because we know how to play in the wind. Mixing in the cold threw us off.”Tanya Tibshraeny added an 82-83–165 for the Stars, while Taylor Howard shot 81-85–166. Mary Larsh contributed an 88-82–170 for OCU.Morgan Gay led OCU's unattached individuals with a 79-84–163.Results

By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Title-holder Sara Mathieson (Royal Musselburgh) and Sammy Leslie (Westhill), finalists in last year's Aberdeenshire women's county golf championship, will meet in this year's semi-finals tomorrow morning at Portlethen Golf Club.
A former hockey starlet, Sara, who has married Dunbar professional Terry Mathieson since she won the title 12 months ago, beat Sheena Wood (Aberdeen Ladies) by one hole in today's quarter-finals while Leslie, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, beat Jill Harrison (Cruden Bay) by 3 and 2 with one-under-par figures to set up a re-match.
The other semi-final will feature Donna Pocock (Murcar Links), the No 1 match-play qualifier, against Linda Carnie (Newburgh on Ythan). Donna, always in front, was a 3 and 2 winner over Elizabeth Brown (Aboyne) while Linda, the dark horse of the tournament, qualifying 13th of 16, beat young Lauren Duncan (Aboyne) by 5 and 4. Linda's husband, Murray Carnie, only recently stood down as organiser of the Paul Lawrie Foundation due to pressure of work.

Janice Moodie misses the cut in Mexico

Michelle Wie leads in Lorena Ochoa's goodbye tournament

FROM THE PGA.COM WEBSITE
MORELIA, Mexico -- Michelle Wie held her game together with the wind howling through the mountainside ravines at the Tres Marias Championship, shooting a 5-under 68 on Friday to take a one-stroke lead.
Brittany Lincicome (67) and Japan's Ai Miyazato (72) were tied for second.
But the gusts and the emotional ups-and-downs got to Lorena Ochoa, who fell five strokes off the pace with a 73 in her farewell tournament.
This is the last event for the top-ranked Ochoa, under some pressure to deliver a victory for her adoring fans in Mexico -- she has won the event three times -- before stepping away.
"I'll take it I guess with these conditions," Ochoa said. "With all the emotions I am going through and the adrenaline it's been a little bit tough."
Wie beat the wind, and seems to love playing in Mexico where she won her first LPGA Tour event five months ago in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara -- Ochoa's hometown.
"It's fun over here," Wie said. "It's a good attitude over here; relaxed, great weather, great people and hopefully I can keep it going."
It could have been even better for Wie, who pulled off a spectacular birdie on the 541-yard 16th, but then stumbled with two bogeys.
She hit a booming drive downwind on 16 -- father B.J. Wie estimated it at 380 yards -- but hit an 8-iron approach from 165 yards over the green into loose gravel. She chipped out, but knocked it across the green into a bunker. She then holed out from 70 feet, lifting both arms skyward to celebrate the shot.
"Holing out the bunker shot was kind of funny," said Wie, breaking into a smile.
Ochoa tried to force a few laughs, but it wasn't easy -- even for a player recognized as one of the most likeable and humble on the LPGA Tour.
"I try not to think (about the retirement), but of course it is in my head," said Ochoa, who has 27 career victories -- including two majors -- and has held the No. 1 ranking for three years.
"Today when I was struggling a little bit more, I was more frustrated than usual. But you try to smile. Trying to keep myself together and focus on the tournament is difficult."
The 28-year-old Ochoa chose to play Thursday and Friday with Miyazato and Natalie Gulbis. She called Miyazato "the nicest girl on the tour," and she grew up playing junior golf, and college golf at Arizona with Gulbis.
Ochoa said her mind was wandering, walking with Gulbis and talking about the old days. Then she'd pull herself back to reality.
"All of a sudden I'd say: 'Hello, but you are here,'" she said. "It was not my best day, I guess. I only have five or six players in front of me so I'm trying to be positive."
Miyazato, who has won two events of the season and has reached No. 5 in the rankings, missed too many putts.
"The fairways were really firm today, and the greens were a little bit drier, so it was tough to make adjustments about my distance," said Miyazato, who is from Japan's southern island of Okinawa. "But I still had many chances out there."
Lincicome had a hole-in-one on the par-3 13th, using a pitching wedge to hole the 125-yard shot. It was her first on the LPGA Tour.
The American has played all four events this season, playing well but never putting it all together -- until Friday.
"I felt like I've been playing really, really well," she said. "Just if I'm hitting it well, I'm not putting well. If I'm putting well, I'm not hitting it well. It's nice to kind of see it coming together, and of all places Mexico because this is not normally one of my favourite golf courses."
